13 advisers to receive Rising Star Awards from JEA

The Journalism Education Association (JEA) announced this week that 13 advisers will be receiving 2016 Rising Star Awards.

Each year, JEA recognizes advisers with up to five years of experience who show promise as up-and-coming advisers. Nominations for the Rising Star Award can come from scholastic press associations, publishing companies, fellow teachers, students and parents.

The recipients of the 2016 Rising Star Awards are:

  • Samantha Berry, Cypress Creek High School, Houston, Texas
  • Kyle Carter, Richland Jr./Sr. High School, Essex, Missouri
  • Ashley Clark, East Bay High School, Gibsonton, Florida
  • Katie Frazier, Seven Lakes Junior High School, Katy, Texas
  • Rebekah Goode-Peoples, CJE, Woodward Academy, College Park, Georgia
  • Patrick Johnson, CJE, Antioch Community High School, Antioch, Illinois
  • Kari Koshiol, Benilde-St. Margaret’s School, St. Louis Park, Minnesota
  • Kevin Patterson, Oviedo High School, Oviedo, Florida
  • Teresa Scribner, CJE, Cleveland STEM High School, Seattle, Washington
  • Emily Smith, CJE, Pittsburg High School, Pittsburg, Kansas
  • Barbara Tholen, CJE, Lawrence High School, Lawrence, Kansas
  • Leslie Thompson, CJE, Conifer High School, Conifer, Colorado
  • Leah Waters, CJE, Creekview High School, Carrollton, Texas

The 2016 Rising Star winners will be honored at the upcoming JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention, April 14-17 in Los Angeles.
