In the latest episode of That Yearbook Podcast, hosts Sabrina Schmitz, CJE, and Jim Jordan kick off the school year with a lively conversation rooted in two things: excitement for what’s ahead and reflection on what we just saw from thousands of 2025 yearbooks. This fast-paced, insight-packed episode is a must-listen for advisers and students ready to up their game.
What We Learned from Reviewing Thousands of Yearbooks
Every two years, the Walsworth team creates Possibilities, a showcase of standout yearbooks that excel in theme, design, photography and writing. As they review submissions, they spot consistent trends, both the good and the not-so-great. This year, Sabrina and Jim organized their feedback into two categories: “Please” and “How Do You Feel About…”
The “Please” List: Non-Negotiables for Great Yearbooks
- External Margins Matter
Create a consistent white frame around every spread, including your index and ads. It improves readability and elevates the design. - Design Your Endsheets
If your budget allows, use endsheets to carry your theme visually. It’s a seamless way to expand storytelling. - Every Photo Needs a Caption
Yes, even the one on your cover or divider. Captions = journalistic integrity. - Get Your Scale Right
Think Goldilocks: Not too big, not too small. Dominance and hierarchy should guide your layout choices. - Headlines Need Subheads
Don’t let your mods or photo packages float without context. Subheads help clarify, connect and strengthen your spread’s message. - Survey Stats Must Be Credible
If you include infographics or polls, always state how many people were surveyed. “67%” means little without context.
Stick to the Grid
Designing without a grid? You’re missing the backbone of solid layout structure. Access our training videos on how to setup your grid before you start designing
The “How Do You Feel About…” Section
These are the hot takes where opinions vary, and design choices get personal:
- Title pages without photos? Sometimes it works if the typography is strong.
- Floating cutouts? No. Anchor your photos.
- Infographics without source numbers? Still no.
- Stretching fonts for effect? Proceed with extreme caution.
Captions in a bunch? It’s okay – if readers can match them to photos.
