Each year National Teacher’s Day and Teacher Appreciation Week helps us recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of teachers around the globe. Teachers not only shape future generations, they’re mentors, role models, counselors, cheerleaders and more. Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week as yearbook staffers offers some unique and creative opportunities, given your skills and the resources you have available. Below are some ways to celebrate your yearbook adviser (or any teacher) not only on National Teacher’s Day (Tuesday, May 6) but all throughout Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9).
Join us in celebrating teachers by sharing pictures on social media and tagging #Walsworth and #ThankATeacher with how you are honoring the teachers at your school!
Top Ways to Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in a Yearbook Classroom:
- Create a “Yearbook Staff Thanks You” Video – It doesn’t have to be perfect, just film short clips letting your teacher know how much you all appreciate them. This could include individual messages, funny stories, or even a group “thank you” message! You can play it during class, on the morning announcements, and post it on your social media!
- Write a handwritten note – This is a truly meaningful and budget-friendly way to show your appreciation. Take a moment to tell your teacher how much you value them. Whether on a sticky note, a homemade card, or a store-bought one, your heartfelt words will undoubtedly make their day. Tip: Design a Custom Yearbook-Themed Card. Instead of a generic card, design a card that looks like a mini yearbook cover or spread.
- Organize a “Yearbook-Style” Slideshow – Dedicate a class period to sharing a slideshow of compliments for the teacher, much like gathering quotes for the yearbook. Students can share photos and specific examples of how the teacher has made an impact on them, helped them, made the class enjoyable and engaged/inspired them.
- Give a gift card – Showing you appreciate them doesn’t require a big budget. Gift cards to their favorite places, such as Starbucks, Chipotle, a local gem, or Amazon are thoughtful and often easy to obtain. Consider splitting the expense by contributing with friends towards one card.
- Fulfill their Amazon wish list or host a supply drive – Many teachers have Amazon wish lists for their classrooms. Check if you can fulfill some of the items or coordinate a supply drive to replenish the classroom.
- Create a “Yearbook Superlatives” for the Teacher – Brainstorm fun and positive superlatives related to your Adviser’s teaching style or contributions to the yearbook (e.g., “Most Likely to Offer Encouragement,” “Best Design Vision,” “Master of the Red Pen”). Make sure they are positive, kind and fun!
- Write a positive note to your principal about your teacher – While the principal’s office might intimidate you, sharing your positive experiences with your teacher can be impactful. Principals often receive more feedback about concerns than strengths, so it’s valuable for them to hear. This positive communication can boost a teacher’s morale and even benefit their career.
- Decorate the Yearbook Classroom – Surprise your adviser by decorating the classroom with a “We Appreciate You” theme, using design elements and photos from the yearbook! You can also create signs and posters! Tip: check with clubs and organizations that make posters at your school frequently to see if they have any leftover supplies you can use.
- Bring snacks – It’s widely believed that snacks can enhance learning. At least we think so! Consider bringing something for everyone to enjoy – whether it’s a healthy option or a delicious treat. Teaming up with classmates can make it more affordable. Make sure to be mindful of any dietary restrictions, such as gluten, dairy, peanut allergies and vegan preferences.
- Nominate Them for Recognition – Plenty of organizations want to recognize great teachers. Look up if there are awards in your district that you can nominate your favorite teacher for or businesses who highlight great teachers. Your school administration can help you know where to start.
- Ask Advertisers to Donate Gift Certificates – You already have the relationships built, don’t be afraid to ask yearbook advertisers to donate a gift certificate for your teacher. They already support the school, and local businesses (restaurants for a free meal, shops for gift cards, florists for a bouquet, bakeries for dessert, local spots for a free ticket) might be willing. Even larger organizations could offer something (like sporting tickets). Be respectful and emphasize it’s voluntary. You never know what they might offer!
- Use Your Artistic Talents – Don’t discount your own talents. Homemade gifts often mean more than anything you can buy in a store. Artists can create unique gifts: a small painting, music, designs or poems. Show your teacher your talents or express your appreciation through your art.
