Walsworth Yearbooks schools win big with 25 Sweepstakes prizes in 2017 Yearbook Excellence Contest

Students from Walsworth Yearbooks schools won 25 of the 36 Sweepstakes prizes in the 2017 Yearbook Excellence Contest, sponsored by Quill and Scroll.

Sweepstakes honors

The yearbook staff from Arrowhead Christian Academy in Redlands, California, were among the big winners with eight Sweepstakes winners in Division B, which is for schools with 750 or fewer students. The Arrowhead Sweepstakes winners included: Susan Wang for People, Graphic Design, Index and Headline Writing; Christine Hysell for Theme Development; Brendan Bell for Academics; Sunny Zu for Advertising and Clara Prins for Personality Profile.

Also in the Division B category, Brandon Brooks (Feature Photo) and Minna Autry (Caption Writing) from Calvary Day School in Savannah, Georgia, were Sweepstakes winners. Three students from Notre Dame de Sion High School in Kansas City, Missouri, which is a new Walsworth school for 2018, were Sweepstakes winners, including Moriana Jaco (Student Life), Chloe Long (Clubs or Organizations) and Livy Wood (Sports).

The yearbook staff from McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas, had five Sweepstakes winners in Division A for schools with more than 750 students. Those winners included Nicole Stuessy for Index, Headline Writing and Design and Caption Writing; Grayson Henry for Student Life and Anne Penprase for Advertising.

Three yearbook staffers each from Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, and Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas, were Sweepstakes winners in Division A. From Boone, Abby Hutsell (Clubs or Organizations), Albany Alexander (People) and Tyler Rispoli (Photo Illustration) took Sweepstakes honors. From Shawnee Mission North, Marrianna Orrego (Theme Development), Mackensay Yazel (Academic Photo) and Isabella Ramirez (Graphic Design) did.

Addie von Drehle from Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kansas, won the Division A Sweepstakes prize for Personality Profile.

Blue and Gold Awards

Quill and Scroll awarded its Blue and Gold Awards to the yearbook staffs that showed the best overall performance in the contest and Walsworth schools again performed well.

In Division A, McKinney was honored for Staff Excellence and Comprehensive Writing. Boone was awarded a Blue and Gold prize for Comprehensive Visuals, while Shawnee Mission East won for Comprehensive Writing.

In Division B, Arrowhead Christian took the Blue and Gold honor for Staff Excellence and another for Comprehensive Writing. Calvary Day School was awarded for Comprehensive Visuals and Comprehensive Writing.

Gold Key winners

In addition to the Sweepstakes winners, nine schools whose 2017 yearbooks were printed by Walsworth Yearbooks had National Gold Key winners in this year’s contest, including:

  • Arrowhead Christian Academy, Redlands, California
  • Blue Valley Northwest High School, Overland Park, Kansas
  • Boone High School, Orlando, Florida
  • Calvary Day School, Savannah, Georgia
  • Haltom High School, Haltom City, Texas
  • McKinney High School, McKinney, Texas
  • Northwest High School, Jackson, Michigan
  • Shawnee Mission East High School, Prairie Village, Kansas
  • Shawnee Mission North High School, Overland Park, Kansas

A 10th school, which is a new Walsworth Yearbooks school for 2018, Notre Dame de Sion High School, also had several winners the National Gold Key list.

Each year, staff members of yearbooks are invited to participate in the Yearbook Excellence Contest and compete in 18 categories. Winners receive the Quill and Scroll National Gold Key award and, when seniors, become eligible to apply for one of the Edward J. Nell Memorial or George and Ophelia Gallup scholarships.
