At Uniondale High School, yearbook isn’t just a class or a book; it’s a mindset

As a Title I school, Uniondale serves a diverse community where access, affordability and student engagement truly matter. From the beginning, my mission has been simple: every student deserves to be part of the story. In a time when financial barriers or lack of representation can keep students on the sidelines, I’ve worked to build a yearbook program rooted in inclusion, creativity and connection. No matter a school’s size or their demographics, the yearbook should always be meaningful and attainable for all.

Building a Foundation

Walsworth helped us price our book in a way that made it possible for our yearbook to remain accessible to our community while still delivering a high quality product our students could be proud of. That foundation allowed us to focus on what mattered most: building a program centered on students.

I don’t approach the yearbook as optional or exclusive. I see it as an experience every student should be able to be a part of, whether they are featured in it, helped create it or hold it in their hands at the end of the year.

That mindset reshaped the culture around yearbook at Uniondale. What began as a single class grew into a three-course program, giving students opportunities to explore storytelling, design, marketing and business in a way that represents our entire school community.

Reframing the Yearbook Experience

My background in business education played a key role in that growth. I treat yearbook like a real-world enterprise. Students learn how to understand their audience, market a product and generate demand. From keeping pricing fair to using intentional sales strategies, every decision we make has a purpose. Walsworth’s marketing tools supported those efforts while allowing students to apply real-world skills in an authentic way.

One of our most impactful strategies has been the use of social media to connect with students. Through Instagram, students produced video promotions, workplace style comedy sketches and relatable content that brought energy and authenticity to yearbook sales. These short, student-driven videos quickly became one of our most effective tools for generating excitement and increasing our engagement.

That shift in approach made a real impact. More students wanted to jointhe class, share ideas and take pride in what we create. Yearbooks became more than a product; they became something students feel connected to. Our success ultimately comes from a commitment to inclusion. I chose to make it a priority to reach students who might otherwise feel overlooked and ensure the yearbook is always within reach. This book is about them – their experiences, their memories and their voices.

That commitment was affirmed this year when our program was featured in Walsworth’s Possibilities book, a collection highlighting some of the strongest yearbook programs across the country. Being included was a true testament to the creativity, dedication and hard work of our students, as well as the growth I experienced as an adviser with Walsworth’s support over the years. It was a moment of pride not just for our yearbook staff, but for the entire Uniondale community.

We also expanded our efforts beyond promotion through fundraising. Using platforms like Double Good Popcorn, we raised funds that directly supported our program, helping us bring in sports photographers, enhance coverage of student life and even provide free copies of the yearbook for students who actively participate in the class. Because we operate with the core belief that every student deserves a yearbook and the yearbook deserves to be seen by all, the effort was worth it if it removed a potential barrier.

Reaching Our Audience

The result was something bigger than a book. We built a program that reflects our community, empowers students and shows that yearbook can thrive anywhere.

The yearbook should never feel out of reach. If you build it with your students in mind, they’ll help you turn it into something truly special.
