Orange Glen adviser named a JEA Rising Star

Written by Marketing Staff

Kansas City, Mo. (Dec. 27, 2011) – Jessica Young from Orange Glen High School in Escondido, Calif. – a Walsworth customer – has been chosen a recipient of the Rising Star Award from the Journalism Education Association (JEA).

Young is in her fifth year of teaching English and journalism at Orange Glen High, where she advises the yearbook and newspaper. She teaches at regional and national conferences, including the JEA/NSPA national conventions, and has written for Walsworth’s Idea File magazine.

“I have learned so much from my mentor Konnie Krislock, my Walsworth sales rep Courtney Carroll, my fellow advisers, and above all else – my students – over the past four years,” said Young. “I would not be a fitting candidate for this award if it were not for the incredibly hard work of my yearbook and newspaper staffs and the unwavering support of those I work with.”

Each year, JEA recognizes advisers with up to five years of experience who show promise as up-and-coming advisers. Nominations for the Rising Star Award can come from scholastic press associations, yearbook companies, fellow teachers, students and parents. This year the JEA recognized eight advisers, including:

  • Jody Evans, Hillcrest High School, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
  • Heather Hanks, CJE, Bloomingdale High School, Valrico, Fla.
  • Stephanie Keagle, CJE, Auburn Mountainview High School, Auburn, Wash.
  • Evelyn Lauer, CJE, Niles West High School, Skokie, Ill.
  • Beth Phillips, Francis Howell North High School, St. Charles, Mo.
  • Mary Seal, Taylorsville High School, Taylorsville, Utah
  • Timothy Yorke, Heritage High School, Leesburg, Va.
  • Jessica Young, CJE, Orange Glen High School, Escondido, Calif.

Each Rising Star winner will be presented with a plaque during the adviser awards luncheon at the upcoming JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention, April 12-15 in Seattle.
