Fun. Relevant. These are words that come to mind when you first look at the cover of Hoofbeats. A gray matte cover with glossy clear silk screen over the word “stuff” introduces the theme and provides the visual backdrop for the entire book. According to editors Cynthia Alvarez and Jordan Steyer, “Strokes, rectangles, and a bitmap effect became the identity for our book.” The two-page opening is a visual and verbal show-and-tell of stuff that mattered to students at Burges in 2014. A strong vertical dominant photograph on a bitmap screen ties the spread together while the copy utilizes short, snappy phrases that explain the “stuff” this book is made of. Each divider spread features a grayscale dominant image that serves as a backdrop to other photos and copy.
