- Theme: "Think About It"
Adviser: Renee Burke - MJE
Editors: Blake Waranch, Morgan Rowland
Walsworth representatives: Missy Green, Adam Livesay, Tracy De la FeuilliezThe four-color matte laminate cover features a glossy, clear silk screen in the shape of a vertical downward pointing arrow. Inside the arrow are words and phrases found on theme pages inside the book in the theme colors of purple, teal, red, orange and blue. And prominently featured at the bottom is the theme, embossed and covered in a glossy, clear silk screen, along with the book name and year. The Legend staff created a roadmap through the year with inviting dividers and powerful spreads. Strong background photographs are the hallmarks of the theme pages.
- Theme: "Expanding Our Network"
Adviser: Brad Cook
Editor: Cassidy Richardson
Walsworth representative: Matt HolmesAn ultra-modern geometric design in shades of blue is the focal point of this linen cover with the theme showcased in silver foil. For a staff that grew from 13 to 42 in just three months, this design is a visual representation of the complications they faced but also a reflection of the connectivity inherent in an ever-changing network known as high school. Munhinotu uses three spreads to introduce its theme, integrating geographic designs, familiar icons, high-interest photographs and copy that is presented in varying fonts and styles.
- Theme: "Radical"
Adviser: Jai Tanner
Editor: Haewon Ma
Walsworth representative: Lori Garcia“Radical.” It’s the theme of this book but it’s also the best adjective to describe the cover of Pride 2014. The black matte cover with bright colors, interesting lines and shapes includes a wonderful explanation of the relevance of this word to the book and to the lives of the people found inside the book. Pride uses two spreads to introduce the theme of the book and masterfully uses all of the theme elements introduced on the cover, endsheets and title page – the green box, the colorful symbols, the black background, the circular-arrow graphic. Seven divider spreads keep the theme rolling, each utilizing a strong dominant photo with the circular-arrow graphic focusing our attention on the subject.
- Theme: ”n/a (not applicable)”
Advisers: Jayne Beatty, Jeanne Giampetro, David Morris, Kelly Rosenwasser
Editors: Lauren Smith, Megan DeArmit
Walsworth representative: Cheryl Franzmann - CJEA clever theme takes advantage of the initials of the school name, North Allegheny, resulting in “n/a” or not/applicable. With a marble effect on a matte black cover, the n/a is presented in gold foil while the “ot” of the word “not” and the “pplicable” of the word “applicable” feature a glossy, clear silk screen effect. The opening spread is visually connected to the cover with the marble effect on a black background and the theme featured prominently over a collection of emotion-charged photographs. Opening copy is well-written with numerous references to how the stereotypes associated with high school and teenagers are not applicable to North Allegheny. Throughout the book, the Safari staff has pulled out the n/a from words in headlines.
- Theme: "Linked"
Adviser: Anthony Campbell
Editors: Jack Usry, Lucia Villani
Walsworth representative: Jeff WoodLinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network with more than 300 million users. Perhaps Rye High School’s yearbook has a tad fewer readers but the theme is certainly one that connects to 2014. The gray matte lamination cover provides the perfect background for the cover graphics that include a debossed hot foil maroon link and an embossed white link with clear silk screen applied. Stagecoach uses its opening to introduce the theme through its copy and to explain how to download and use the Aurasma app to view the video links found inside the book. On the divider pages, the long intersecting line comes into play as a place to rest five images on a horizontal edge.
- Theme: "Basically a Tribe"
Adviser: Erin Adwell
Editors: Victoria Esquibell, Jessie King, Osman Moneer, Kaitlyn Whetstine
Walsworth representative: Lisa Llewellyn - CJESchool-mascot inspired themes are sometimes trite, but that is not the case with Phoenix. Using a linear arrow with feathered fletching in colors that correspond with the sections inside of the book, “basically a tribe” comes to life on a textured white matte cover that features a watercolor painting of a warrior headdress. Thin red lines – some straight and some squiggly – enhance the word “tribe,” adding to the theme elements found on the beautiful cover. Five spreads provide the full explanation for the theme of Phoenix. The copy explains “the basic elements, earth, water, air, fire eternally bind us together to basically create a tribe in our territory. We are the warriors.” Six dividers explain how the theme is connected to specific spreads within the sections. Each of these spreads feature photos that reinforce the concepts discussed and a table of contents.
- Theme: "Scratch That"
Adviser: Crystal Kazmierski
Editors: Hayley Park, Makayla Marvin
Walsworth representatives: Shaunna Taylor, Anne ScottWhile the “scratch” theme is not new, the execution of “Scratch That” by the Wings staff of Arrowhead Christian Academy – scratch that, Arrowhead Christian Academy Upper School and Redlands Christian Middle School – is nothing short of brilliant. The cover features muted tones of black, gray, purple, red and green layers of scratched photographs of textures found around the school. The name of the book is prominently written in a typewriter font in the top third while the handwritten theme embossed in silver foil occupies the lower third of the front cover. Two opening spreads provide a visual and verbal link to the theme with handwritten caption information and copy that takes us behind the scenes of a school in transition. Besides the opening and closing, Wings uses three other theme spreads inside the book to maintain the flow.
- Theme: "Ten – Only The Beginning"
Adviser: Robin Sawyer
Editors: Jeni Rust, Summer Warrington, Farley Wickre
Walsworth representative: Cosette Livas - Ed.SA shiny, navy litho cover provides the perfect background for this anniversary book. Ten triangles in white, gray, coral and light blue accentuate the two-part theme with the first part (TEN) presented in white using a bold sans serif font followed by the second part of the theme (only the BEGINNING) in an ultra-modern, slender font. The opening uses just two pages but provides a clear link to both the theme and the importance of the 10th edition of Shorelines. One picture from each edition of the school’s previous yearbooks fills the 10 triangles on the opening spread, with the largest triangle reserved for 2014. Each of the five divider spreads features a navy background with a coral drop cap and white headline in the same font as the theme on the cover. Ten triangles contain five photos that capture the essence of that section.
- Theme: "Slant"
Adviser: Shannon Team
Editor: Hannah Ranson
Walsworth representative: Jim ChannellThe Kaleidoscope staff uses a theme with obvious verbal and visual possibilities with “Slant.” A black matte cover features shiny clear silk screen over the theme word and slanted lines while a coral, teal and lime green graphic on white litho occupy the rest of the front and back cover. The opening spreads use mirror image designs that feature slices of six action photographs. The opening copy introduces the theme with specific examples of ways in which “Slant” represents the common denominator for the uniquely different perspectives of the people who make up Lugoff Elgin High School. The dividers carry the theme forward by repeating the graphic from the cover and using photographs in diagonal shapes.
- Theme: "Stuff & more"
Adviser: Patricia Monroe
Editors: Cynthia Alvarez, Jordan Steyer
Walsworth representative: Lori GarciaFun. Relevant. These are words that come to mind when you first look at the cover of Hoofbeats. A gray matte cover with glossy clear silk screen over the word “stuff” introduces the theme and provides the visual backdrop for the entire book. According to editors Cynthia Alvarez and Jordan Steyer, “Strokes, rectangles, and a bitmap effect became the identity for our book.” The two-page opening is a visual and verbal show-and-tell of stuff that mattered to students at Burges in 2014. A strong vertical dominant photograph on a bitmap screen ties the spread together while the copy utilizes short, snappy phrases that explain the “stuff” this book is made of. Each divider spread features a grayscale dominant image that serves as a backdrop to other photos and copy.
- Theme: "Power Full"
Adviser: Britton Taylor
Editors: Holly Fohr, Taylor Fohr
Walsworth representatives: Missy Green, Adam Livesay, Tracy de la FeuilliezNine miniature color photographs connected by red, purple, teal, gold and green graphics show us just how “POWER FULL” a theme can be. The matte white laminate cover features a glossy, clear silk screen over the embossed theme words, graphics and photographs that are alternately embossed and debossed. To top it all off, the cover has an Aurasma video that comes to life when the app is launched on a mobile device. On the opening spreads, the same fonts and theme colors in the headline package are repeated from the cover. Instead of using divider pages to section the book by coverage or months or some other traditional method, the Fusion staff instead chose to intersperse spotlight spreads throughout the book.
- Theme: "Yours"
Adviser: Jim Jordan
Editors: Madison Bell, Sarah Foreman, Elisabeth Smith
Walsworth representatives: Kelly Parsons, Christine FoxworthyAt first glance, Decamhian’s theme appears to be YOURS. But we all know, a yearbook cover is never a what-you-see-is-what-you-get proposition. After further review, the theme is actually “YOURS” and “OURS.” To make sure we get it, the OUR is embossed inside of YOURS. Likewise, the other graphic elements on the gray litho cover – orange, green, yellow, blue and red squares and dotted lines – are also embossed and silk screened for emphasis. Decamhian uses two spreads to introduce the theme, with the first spread emphasizing individual stories with references to spreads that are found inside the book. In a flipped, mirror layout of the first opening, the second opening spread uses photos and writing to set the stage for a book that reflects the ways in which everything that happened at Del Campo in 2014 was simultaneously a YOURS and OURS moment.
- Theme: "Stand Out"
Adviser: Alice Hoy
Editor: KayKay Thomas
Walsworth representatives: Alex McCauley, Heather LaBordeWith plans for a new school looming in the future, the Catamount staff used the yearbook to showcase all of the positives of the current Crosby High School. And school spirit “stands out” on this school-designed black matte laminate cover. A four-color photograph with a glossy clear silk screen captures the essence of that spirit while the word OUT is embossed on top of the image. The two-spread opening is dominated by a black and white photo that fades into the copy. Six divider spreads are used in Catamount to segment the coverage by season and to help the people section “stand out” from the rest of the book. The dividers utilize a dominant image that is primarily black and white but features “stand out” subjects that are four-color cutouts.
- Theme: "This is what"
Adviser: Joanna Burns
Editor: Allison Blank
Walsworth representative: Michelle DiSimone - CJEThe year and the book’s name are discreetly debossed in the upper third of the brilliant white matte lamination cover, while the verbal theme is debossed and boldly stated in black in the lower third. An embossed, teal square serves as a period following the “this is what” statement and connects visually to the purple, yellow, red and black squares that anchor the back cover. Wah’ Kon-Tah 2014 also uses a purple, teal, yellow and red square to separate essential information on the spine. A large black and white picture dominates the opening spread where we learn the “what” behind the Wah’ Kon-Tah’s theme. Each section divider features a signature color that corresponds with the colors introduced on the cover.
- Theme: "Candid"
Adviser: Judy Cannaday
Editors: Libby Jourdan, Brianna Winoski, Savannah Ryburn
Walsworth representatives: Sabrina Schmitz - CJE, Donna and David HutchersonA clever play on words serves as the foundation for this theme – “Candid.” The dual meaning of the word is accentuated through the use of two fonts – a slender serif font for CAN and a bold sans serif font for DID. Separately the words give us one meaning; together they tell us something else. On the inside, great pictures, detailed captions and the repetition of key graphic elements found on the cover are clear indicators that theme pages go with Aftermath 2014. Each of the seasonal dividers features a full-page photo and other small photographs that direct us to spreads found in that section.
