Sending comfort to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Written by Kris Mateski, CJE

On a day intended to celebrate love, a horrible tragedy happened instead.

The news from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School yesterday was difficult to comprehend. All children, in every school across the country, are our children, but what happened to the children and staff at this high school was more personal.

Walsworth is a long-time partner of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We’ve been helping them produce their yearbook for years. So, we watched the events unfold with nervous apprehension because we know many of the teachers, staff and students there. And like most people, we felt heartbroken and helpless while watching.

The desire to help

Sabrina Schmitz, our Walsworth Yearbooks sales rep in Tampa, Florida, took her helpless feeling and turned it into action by contacting the schools in her area last night. Below is the email Sabrina sent:

The tragedy yesterday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, is heartbreaking and hits close to home for all of us as educators and those working on school campuses every day. This school is part of our Walsworth family and many of you may even know the adviser from Camp Orlando, FSPA and other workshops and journalism events. In times like these, we all feel the desire to help however we can.

As a yearbook community, I think we can show the yearbook staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas that they are loved and supported by banding together and sending them some words of encouragement. If you would like to participate, simply have your yearbook staff make some cards, notes, letters of encouragement to the students and adviser of the Aerie yearbook staff.

Thank you for your thoughts and help in supporting another member of our Walsworth yearbook family.

    Sabrina

How you can help

Taking Sabrina’s idea, consider sending your words of encouragement to the school. You can reach the yearbook staff directly on Twitter at @AerieYearbook and the school’s mailing address is:

    Marjory Stoneman Douglas
    5901 NW Pine Island Road
    Parkland, FL 33076

Your encouragement will help bring love back to a place that desperately needs it right now.
