What's listed below is currently a tentative schedule for Walsworth's 2021 National Virtual Workshop.

This workshop is offered free to any school in the U.S. All you need to do is register for each session you are interested in attending. After registering, you will receive the link for that session. We strongly recommend adding the session to your calendar after registering. Each breakout class may have handouts for the sessions.

New for 2021: Master Classes! Each day, two students from your program will be allowed to register to take Master Classes with some of the top advisers/trainers in journalism today. These classes will have a $50 registration fee. Links to Master Classes will be provided for those who registered and have paid for the classes.

Monday, July 12 - Theme Day

Dress Up: School Spirit Day

Wear your school colors.

Fun Activity: Decorate your room to showcase your school spirit.

Tuesday, July 13 - Writing Day

Dress Up: Detective Day

Dress as super sleuths in honor of strong reporting, interviewing and undercover work.

Fun activity: Turn your space into an escape room. More information to follow.

Writing Master Class with Dow Tate and Leland Mallett, CJE (Register here to attend this session)

Staff lunch and create your own escape room

First general breakout session, 1:10 -1:45 p.m. Central (You will choose and register for breakouts the week of the workshop.)

Wednesday, July 14 - Photo/Leadership Day

Dress Up: Sea Shanty Day

All staffers dress as pirates, fishermen or sailors.

All-staff photo scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunt info will be distributed prior to camp, so advisers can adapt. Photos from the scavenger hunt must be uploaded by 10 p.m., Central time.

Thursday, July 15 - Design Day

Dress Up: Dress Like a Dad Day

Fun Activity: Staffs submit a video with the best and worst dad jokes

11 a.m. - Noon Central

Staff lunch and create a wall of inspiration

First general breakout session, 1:10-1:45 p.m. Central (You will choose and register for breakouts the week of the workshop.)

  • Why using inspiration is important
  • Design vocab for beginning designers (appropriate for middle school)
  • White space, internal margins and framing
  • Type snuggling
  • Designing headlines
  • Designing mods
  • Columns and grids
  • Beginner/middle school design

2-4 p.m. Central

Staff design projects with instructors

4-11 p.m. Central

Design Wars yearbook edition. We will provide photos, and staffs will design spreads and upload prior to midnight for judging. Rules will be sent to advisers at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
