Award: NSPA Pacemaker FinalistOn the surface, Timberview Middle School probably looked like any other middle school but the yearbook staff asked readers to “look past the basics” and see everything that was unique and powerful about the school in 2017. Headline treatments, starting with the theme phrase “Look Again” on the cover, are simple and consistent throughout the book using the font GoodName. Each division page appears on a gray background, also matching the cover, and uses a fun collage of photos. The upbeat coverage stays focused on memorable events and trends.

Award: NSPA Pacemaker FinalistFor the 2017 edition of the Buffalo, Haltom editors were inspired by author Pat Conroy’s famous quote about yearbooks, “Yearbook is a love letter a school writes to itself.” Using the concept theme “H” and a split design that basically cut the book in half (first and second semester), the staff created a book that showed the multiple sides of their school community. School colors (black and orange) and a split “H” logo are used effectively on the theme spreads.
- Theme: "All Over the Place"
Adviser: Renee Burke - MJE
Editors: Emma McClane, Lara Dusing
Walsworth representatives: Missy Green, Adam Livesay - CJE, Tracy de la Feuilliez
Award: CSPA Silver CrownWith the 2017 edition of Legend, the Boone editors wanted to give readers a taste of how crazy and hectic life can be for their students. They chose the theme “All Over the Place” to represent the constant chaos in their hallways and the “craziness that came with being a Brave.” A few key design touches help convey the feeling, particularly use of the grungy headline Edo that gave the appearance of brush strokes on headlines.

Award: CSPA Silver CrownThe Hagerty staff expertly documented the events of the school year in the 2017 Fusion with a yearbook that does everything well. The design is clean, simple and pleasing to the eye; there are several show-stopping photos that make the reader pause and take notice; and the chronological coverage does a wonderful job of taking the story of the year month by month to hit all the highlights.

Awards: CSPA Silver Crown, NSPA Pacemaker FinalistEverything about the 2017 Hoofbeats stands out, from the bold red cover and direct, snappy theme copy on the opening pages to the large, blown out photos on most spreads and frequent use of vibrant colors everywhere. The Burges editors explained in their colophon that they very much wanted to step out of their “comfort zones” with the creation of the book, and their creativity shows.
- Theme: “Altered”
Adviser: Vanessa Martinez
Editor: Danielle Miller
Walsworth representative: Lori Garcia
Award: CSPA Silver CrownThe El Dorado editors chose the theme “Altered” for the 2017 Legend because the 2017 school year was one of those years where things at their school were just… different. Some new school policies made students adjust. The yearbook staff chose to reveal the book’s cover early for the first time in several years. The book’s coverage is filled with new discoveries about El Dorado students – capturing the personality beneath the surface. The staff chose a cluster of geometric shapes as the repeating design element that represents the “Altered” state El Dorado was in for much of the year.
- Theme: "So Close"
Adviser: Courtney Kohler-Hanks
Editor: Camille McNairy
Walsworth representatives: Missy Green, Adam Livesay - CJE, Tracy de la Feuilliez
Award: CSPA Silver CrownThe editors of the 2017 Odyssey from University High wanted their yearbook to be “bold and energetic, complimenting the personalities of our students.” That’s why they designed a book with images and text bursting off the edge of the pages, and they used big, bold headlines with lots of color everywhere. The book’s theme phrase, “So Close” came from a saying often used by students and also reflected the togetherness of the school’s community.
- Theme: "In a Flash"
Adviser: Nick Crisafi
Editor: Skyler Zur
Walsworth representatives: Veronika Levine - CJE, Tamara Moore
Award: CSPA Silver CrownA single school year comes and goes very quickly. The memories happen fast. As the opening pages of the 2017 Azimuth said, “life races by in a flash.” The Azimuth staff used that idea of a year at The Benjamin Middle School happening “In a Flash” as their theme and created a fun book for their readers. The “flash” is symbolized on the cover and endsheets with a lightning bolt, and the three triangles repeated together on theme pages and in the folio represent how this memorable year moved quickly.
- Theme: "It Just Is..."
Adviser: Whitney Huntington - CJE
Editors: Constance French, Amy Zelaya
Walsworth representative: Barb Heider
Award: CSPA Silver CrownIn their 2017 edition of the Predator, the West Potomac staff set out to show off the diversity of their school using the theme “It Just Is…” Circles are a repeating design element, both in the ellipses at the end of the theme phrase, and in the cluster of transparent circles on the cover, folio and spreads. The Predator’s chronological coverage is outstanding and ambitious. Dozens of individual students with unique stories were profiled on spreads called “people features” and in each seasonal section, there are “packets” devoted to signature events of the year, such as homecoming.
- Theme: "Just Take the Risk"
Adviser: Tiffany Kopcak
Editors: Katherine Rodriguez, Madison Douglas, Samantha Irish, Travis Rocha
Walsworth representative: Brian Flamm
Award: CSPA Silver CrownIn their colophon, the Colonial Forge editors said the idea behind the 2017 Apollo came while brainstorming at a Barnes and Noble during summer yearbook camp. They saw the headline “Necessary Risks” on a book, and the concept of risk being a choice for Colonial Forge students took hold. The staff took their own risks, creating three cover variations – navy blue, forest green and silver. The Sunfast font was used for headlines and played into the idea of risk by giving the design an edgy feel. Several examples from the coverage highlighted students expressing their individuality, such as a spread on adrenaline junkies or the unique items carried in backpacks.
- Theme: "Thought You Should Know."

Editors: Mariana Orrego, Morgan Cole

Awards: CSPA Silver Crown, NSPA PacemakerWhen there are 1,576 students in your school, it’s hard to get to know them all. But the 2017 Indian yearbook staff “Thought You Should Know” more about them, and made sure by the end of the book that the reader did. Use of school colors throughout reminded students that this is their school. From there, it was all about great photography and reporting to give details about the big and little moments of the year.
- Theme: "Fragment/Fuse"
Adviser: Tom Nelson
Editor: Mali McGuire
Walsworth representative: Priscilla Hernandez
Award: CSPA Gold CrownIn three sentences, the opening of the 2017 edition of The Tower explained how students as individuals (“fragment”) come together to create community (“fuse”). Gorgeous photography, lots of white space and use of an angled line as a theme element created a simple look for rich content of stories highlighting people and groups. Those common elements enabled the staff to create individual spreads that still look like they belong to this book.

Awards: CSPA Gold Crown, NSPA PacemakerRight from the front endsheet, the 2017 Wings staff teased their readers with this basic truth about yearbooks: “Hey there. We know you’re dying to see what’s inside and how many pages you’re on.” That fun opening salvo set the tone for this edition of Wings, which lived up to the standard set by previous Arrowhead staffs with a combination of simple but elegant magazine-style layouts and personal story-driven coverage – a “collection” of memories from the 2016-17 school year that readers will be able to enjoy for years.
- Theme: "From Now On"
Adviser: Dow Tate
Editors: Katie Kuhlman, Emory Foster, Hope Hess
Walsworth representative: John Kelley
Awards: CSPA Gold Crown, NSPA Pacemaker FinalistThe staff of the 2017 Hauberk lived up to its school’s award-winning yearbook tradition by creating a 520-page masterpiece using the theme “From Now On,” a phrase that did the job of addressing past events while also looking to the future. The staff used crystals as a recurring design element, representing every individual within Shawnee Mission East coming together. As with past editions of Hauberk, the elite photography stands out on almost every spread. The book’s coverage is robust, a great mixture of in-depth profiles and spreads brimming with mods filled with fun additional facts.
- Theme: “It’s All Good”
Adviser: Susan Massy
Editor: Tess Holcom
Walsworth representative: John Kelley
Awards: CSPA Gold Crown, NSPA PacemakerIt’s not easy creating a 400+-page yearbook and making every spread quality, even for a large staff like Shawnee Mission Northwest’s. But the 2017 Lair staff pulled off the trick well, appropriately using the theme “It’s All Good” for their book. The copy on the opening spreads matched the theme by being written in a casual, fun tone, recapping several events from the year. Lair’s coverage encompassed all the annual clubs and sports with unique spins for the current year. Highlights included a feature on pairs of senior-freshman siblings and a short profile of four students outlining their reasons why they didn’t fit traditional high school stereotypes.
- Theme: "Out of the Blue"
Adviser: Alyssa Boehringer
Editors: Nicole Stuessy, Nicole Oesterreicher, Anne Penprase
Walsworth representative: Lisa Lea Llewellyn - CJE
Awards: CSPA Silver Crown, NSPA PacemakerAs they wrote in the colophon, the 2017 Lion staff wanted their yearbook to be “unlike any other” to show off what was unique about them and their year. Black and white photography on the cover and numerous theme spreads, along with splashes of 100% cyan blue (a slightly different shade from their school color – navy blue) reinforced the theme. The “Out of the Blue” section in the middle of the book featured unique stories of students and staff who overcame adversity during the year.

Award: CSPA Silver CrownUncertainty surrounding a new block scheduling system at Gulliver Preparatory School disrupted student routines and got the yearbook staff off to a slow start creating the 2017 edition of the Raider. However, the staff began to crack the code during their fall design workshop when they began sifting through photos of fall events and settled on the theme “We Got This.” From there, the staff set about creating their 400-page opus to the year at Gulliver Prep with a sleek magazine look featuring large, bold images.
- Theme: “We Are Even If You Don’t See It”
Adviser: Jim Jordan
Editors: Tayleigh Greene, Isabelle Kiteck, Ashley Krause, Megan Saunders
Walsworth representative: Kelly Parsons
Awards: CSPA Gold Crown, NSPA PacemakerThe 2017 Decamhian staff asked readers to take a closer look beneath the surface at Del Campo students and their community – a story they started with intricate detail in a six-spread theme opening. The nice design touch of slivers of photos appearing inside headlines and around the corner of pages was used effectively and consistently throughout the book. The coverage, which is divided into traditional sections, really stood out when it focused on unique stories to the year, such as the profile of a new principal and the retiring of a cross country coach after 50 years.
