We’re back after a week off to rest and recharge over the Thanksgiving holiday! There was a whirlwind of activity here in the Yearbooks Blog right before our break last week, and we’ve got some more fun stuff to share.

Michael Reeves said it so matter of factly that I almost missed it, so I asked him to clarify. Next week, when 24 students from Akins High School in Austin, Texas, travel to San Antonio for JEA/NSPA, it will be the first time the school has sent a group to the National High School Journalism Convention.

Scales, the co-editor-in-chief of the yearbook at Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, received one of the 75 scholarships that Walsworth Publishing partnered with JEA and NSPA to create as part of the 75 Scholars program, to pay for his convention registration. He is one of a handful of students from his school who will be attending the convention.

Paige Gomez remembers being so into art as far back as first and second grade that she was entering her work into competitions. To her, it was the origins of her love of photography.

“I’d always been into the artsy stuff, but it didn’t take very long for me to find out I wasn’t too gifted in that area,” Gomez said, with a bit of a laugh. “But then I discovered taking pictures, and I learned it was where I was meant to be.”

The students’ convention registration is being paid for by Walsworth. As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, the company is partnering with NSPA and JEA to provide scholarships to 75 Texas students to cover registration to the convention Nov. 15-18.
