Introducing The Download, a podcast newsletter from WYPN

Written by Shiloh Scott

You’ve probably heard by now, but we have a podcast network! The Walsworth Yearbooks Podcast Network, referred to as WYPN in our office, is the home of Ask Mike, Yearbook Chat with Jim and Behind the Byline. These are all amazing shows (although we may be a little biased), and they’re about to get even better!

We’re excited to announce the launch of The Download, a podcast newsletter that highlights what’s happening at WYPN. How many times have you been listening to a podcast and wondered about the face that goes with that voice? We certainly have, so we decided to share photos when we can through The Download. That’s just the beginning. You can sign up at walsworthyearbooks.com/the-download.

The Content

With each newsletter, we’ll fill you in on what’s happening with our shows. We’ll share information on recent notable episodes. This will include background on the guests and stories, photographs, learning tools and even lesson plans! This content will depend on the show and recent content, but it will always be stuff you want to know.

And, because we know we’re not the only podcasts you listen to, there’s a special section to share what we’re listening to right now. Some of the recommendations are educational, some are newsy and some are just plain fun!

The Shows

For those who aren’t familiar, here’s a rundown of the WYPN shows.

Ask Mike

Hosted by former award-winning adviser and current Walsworth journalism specialist Mike Taylor, CJE, this show focuses on what yearbook staffs are doing to find success. Taylor interviews students (and some advisers) from all over the country about their best practices. Ask Mike is a great listen for yearbook staffs looking for ideas and advice. If you have any questions for Taylor, you can ask him on Twitter (@yrbkmiketaylor) using #AskMike.

Yearbook Chat with Jim

Jim Jordan spent 35 years as a yearbook adviser at Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, California. Even though he recently retired, he’s not ready to step away from the yearbook world. Jordan uses his vast network of connections and his nose for a good story to find compelling interviews with members of the scholastic journalism community.

Behind the Byline

WYPN’s newest podcast is a combination of practical lessons and storytelling! If you’ve ever heard someone ask “When will I ever use this?” about a scholastic journalism course, tell them to listen to Behind the Byline! Hosts Evan Blackwell, CJE, Jenica Hallman and Sarah Scott interview people with a background in high school or college yearbook, broadcast journalism or newspaper about how the skills learned there have helped them succeed later in life. Past interviews include journalists, movie directors and small business owners. Every single person says they still use the skills they learned through scholastic journalism!
