Fashion stays the same for 40 years in teacher’s yearbook photo

Written by Evan Blackwell, CJE

So what did you wear in your yearbook photo? Did you make a point to wear something new every picture day?

That hasn’t been the case for Dale Irby, the beloved P.E. teacher at Prestonwood Elementary School in Dallas, Texas. As the Dallas Morning-News recently wrote about, Irby has worn the same outfit in his yearbook photo for the past 40 years.

Irby’s repeat outfit – a polyester shirt and sweater vest combo – started as an accident four decades ago when he wore it two years in a row by mistake. Despite his initial embarrassment, Irby’s wife dared him to wear the same thing for a third year in a row and the tradition continued.

“After five pictures, it was like: ‘Why stop?'” Irby told the Morning-News.

In honor of Irby’s retirement after 40 years, the Morning-News even compiled a video montage of his school pictures over the years, which can be seen at the link above.
