Redwater yearbook photo editor looking forward to learning in San Antonio

Paige Gomez remembers being so into art as far back as first and second grade that she was entering her work into competitions. To her, it was the origins of her love of photography.

“I’d always been into the artsy stuff, but it didn’t take very long for me to find out I wasn’t too gifted in that area,” Gomez said, with a bit of a laugh. “But then I discovered taking pictures, and I learned it was where I was meant to be.”

Gomez’s love of taking pictures has continued all the way through her second year on the yearbook at Redwater High in Redwater, Texas. Now the photo editor, she’ll get the opportunity to learn even more by attending the JEA/NSPA Fall High School Journalism Convention later this month in San Antonio.

Gomez is getting the opportunity to attend JEA/NSPA as one of the 75 Scholars, students whose convention registration is being paid for by Walsworth. The company is partnering with JEA and NSPA to offer scholarships to 75 Texas students for the event.

“Since I saw that the convention was in Texas, I was really hoping to go,” said Gomez. “That’s why I’m so thankful for this scholarship. This will be a really good opportunity for me to learn different skills that I need to improve on with my photography.”

Gomez said her primary interests have been with sports action photography and nature photography. She’s looking forward to sessions that might be able to help her learn different angles with the camera and how to deal with difficult lighting situations.

And of course, she’s looking forward to all the photo opportunities the trip to San Antonio will present.

“There’s the Alamo and the history, all the buildings,” said Gomez. “There will just be so much.”
