The top five that should never leave your convention backpack (and haven’t left mine)

Written by Tim Shedor

1. Pen and notebook
It’s absolutely essential. There’s a billion and a half lobbyists flaunting their business around here, and you don’t want to hear a sweet yearbook offer that you can’t review later in writing. And with write-offs, the journalist convention’s two-hour marathon of quality and scrawled writing, coming up quickly tonight, a sharp pen and an excessive amount of paper will be priceless this weekend.

2. Frankenstein
Before that Hollywood moneymaker came to fame, the monster lived in Mary Shelley’s short novel. And it still lives, breaths, and whines as it preaches the purpose of life and death to my English class as next week’s due date creeps closer and closer. English homework waits for no man, not even a journalist.

3. Program
The higher-ups announced last night that due to the increase of school registration (the most well-attended convention in NSPA history) the programs for this weekend were produced in limited number. If you lose it, you’re out of luck because they don’t have extra copies. It’s a journalists’ Bible over the next two days, detailing where to go to class and how to get in the hugely popular and hyped-up dance tonight.

4. Harbingers
I’ve already been approached by five fellow j-kids today, asking for a copy of our school’s paper. My co-editor and I left a stack on two separate tables this morning, but in two hours they were gone. The editors of old created a strong reputation for our publication, and it’s an honor to shovel out papers to anyone who asks. If you want one, look for my fatty red backpack.

5. Chewy Granola Bars and General Mills Cereal Bars
This dynamic duo really deserves to have two individual descriptions. This morning I woke up at 8:09 a.m. to an angry knock at the door – our group was supposed to meet and then leave for the convention center at 8 – and the aisle 7 hunger crunchers saved my sorry, breakfast-less self. Oatmeal and Raisin and Cinnamon Toast Crunch get my professionally respected thumbs-up award.
