Lee’s Summit High student designs logo for next year’s JEA/NSPA

When the Fall National High School Journalism Convention comes to Kansas City next year, there will be a local flavor visible right away with the convention logo.
Kenzi Jordan, a senior this year at Lee’s Summit High School in Lee’s Summit, Mo., and the photo editor on the Reflector yearbook, designed the winning entry in a logo contest earlier this year, which was sponsored by the Journalism Educators of Metropolitan Kansas City (JEMKC) – the organization in charge of organizing the 2010 Fall convention.
“I worked on it for a couple of days in class back at the beginning of the year,” said Jordan. “I never really thought I had a chance to win.”
According to Kathy Habiger, the yearbook adviser at Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, Kan., and the president of JEMKC, it is up to the local organizing committee for each convention to develop their own logo for the promotional materials. For the K.C. group, it was important to use student work.
“We felt it was important that the logo be designed by students rather than a professional graphic designer or an adviser,” said Habiger. “Kenzi’s logo was beautiful and perfect for our theme of ‘KConverge.’”
Jordan said she tried to develop a logo that clearly had a feel for Kansas City, with the city’s skyline, and she was pleased with the results.
“I’ve entered photos into photography contests before that have won, but I’ve never really entered any graphic designs into a contest like this,” said Jordan, who hopes to study both graphic design and photography in college next year. “I really enjoy graphic design, so this was great.”
