In her final chance, Whitney High’s Simonsen gets to attend JEA/NSPA Convention

During her three years working on the yearbook, Whitney High School senior Lanina Simonsen watched many of her classmates go on trips to national conventions. Due to the cost, she was never one of them.
“I was always a little jealous of everyone that would come back, because they would always have little inside jokes about a certain restaurant they ate at, or a place they went,” Simonsen said.
This month, that’s going to change. Simonsen is going to get her chance to attend the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in San Francisco, thanks in part to Walsworth’s 50 Scholars program.
Simonsen earned one of the 50 scholarships from Walsworth, NSPA and JEA, which will pay for her registration fees. That, combined with Whitney High’s close proximity just a couple hours away in Rocklin, Calif., gave Simonsen her chance.
This year, Simonsen was the sports editor for Whitney’s yearbook. Now, she’s looking forward to using the convention as a way to start preparing to study journalism in college.
“Journalism has always been one of my automatic interests. It’s one of the classes that I always loved,” said Simonsen. “I have definitely thought about studying journalism in college.”
