What to look for in a fixed-lens digital camera

  • Manual and automatic/program camera controls
  • Effective shutter speed equivalent of at least 1000
  • Advanced metering system
  • Control over both image size and resolution
    (image compression)
  • A range of ISO equivalents (100 to 400-plus)
  • Internal flash control, including fill flash and flash off
  • Color balance control for various lighting situations
  • Sharp, optical telephoto zoom lens of 4x or higher
  • Focus capability at lower light levels
  • Memory card image storage
  • Flash shoe for adding a dedicated bounce flash
  • Easy-to-operate controls
