Brookfield and Marceline win USA Today rivalry contest

Kansas City, Mo. (Dec. 21, 2012) – Marceline and Brookfield, Mo., Walsworth’s two hometowns in north-central Missouri, earned 1,761,259 votes in just one week and were named the winners of USA Today’s first “Best High School Football Rivalry” award.
For winning the contest, Brookfield High School and Marceline High School receive a $10,000 prize.
Brookfield and Marceline have played the annual “Bell Game” series since 1909, and the fierce, traditional competition has involved countless Walsworth employees and families.
USA Today began the contest on Nov. 19, with 153 top rivalries from across the country. After two weeks of voting, the field was narrowed down to 51 for the regional round, then four finalists were selected on Dec. 13.
Throughout the entire process, both communities have rallied around the cause of winning the award.
“The excitement, you can feel it walking in the halls,” Brookfield High School Athletic Director Mike McBroom told USA Today. “Anyone you talk to, the first question is, ‘Hey, you been voting?’ We’ve always rallied for the Bell Game, both communities have, and it takes both of us working together because we’re the little dog in the hunt.”
