The late Paul Schweiger, yearbook adviser at Shaler Area High School, Pittsburgh, Penn., was selected as one of four Distinguished Advisers in the nation. Schweiger, in his 27th year as adviser, passed away last October.
Renee Hardoby, a former yearbook editor, wrote in tribute to him: “In the most tangible of ways, he gave three decades of students the intangible: the courage to be different, the confidence to meet new challenges, and the hope to realize any dream if you’re willing to work for it.”
An seven-year veteran publication adviser from Shawnee Mission North High School, Overland Park, Kan., Becky Lucas was named a Special Recognition Adviser by the Journalism Education Association. The publications she advises are consistently rated high in national competitions. The 1994 yearbook, Indian, was awarded a Silver Crown by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
In support of Lucas’s nomination, former yearbook editor Carlton Drew Callenbach wrote: “…Another aspect which fascinates me about Ms. Lucas is her incredible drive for perfection and accuracy. She is unwilling to lay the copy, or finalize a print, unless it is to the best of the student’s abilities. Not only does this attitude lead to an award-winning yearbook, but it also creates the foundation for award-winning individuals.”
