A new online world from Walsworth

Written by Idea File Staff

Walsworth has created a new online yearbook world at walsworthyearbooks.com, and you and your school community can experience the recording of memories in an entirely new way.

For advisers and yearbook staffs, the website is the nucleus of every aspect of yearbook – from training and creating to educating and selling.

“The reason for our new website is to make our customers’ lives easier by having one place to go to do all the things you need to do for your yearbook – to find ideas for theme, design with Online Design, even sell your yearbook,” said Alex Blackwell, director of yearbook marketing.Outside the Book3

For your school community, the website also is the place to go. Here, students, parents, faculty, local businesses and alumni can buy a yearbook, an ad and even upload images for consideration in the printed book. And these features exist in such a way as to make those tasks easier for the adviser and staffs.

“Advisers’ jobs are decentralized – there are so many jobs involved with the yearbook. It’s apparent that Walsworth sees that, and they are constantly working to make my life easier as an adviser and make me more successful,” said Nate Fincher, yearbook adviser at Atlantic High School in Port Orange, Fla.

“They are serious about creating an all-in-one solution,” Fincher said.

While some areas of the website are new, it is worthwhile to visit the entire site, since areas such as Members Only have been updated. Start exploring the new website in the following areas.

Book and ad sales made easy.

We help you go straight to all of your buyers with a banner link to Online Yearbook Sales and Online Ad Sales. Parents can easily order and pay for a yearbook and options at their convenience, within your deadline. Walsworth acts as a payment processing center for you. All purchases are credited to your Walsworth account, and you get great sales tracking reports to simplify record keeping and distribution.

With ad orders, the parents and community can upload images and copy, and either select a template or have the staff or Walsworth design the ad. The choice is yours. Again, Walsworth acts as a payment processing center, all purchases are credited to your Walsworth account, and you get great sales tracking reports.

Both Online Yearbook Sales and Online Ad Sales are completed through the School Store, which is a service for schools wanting to market and sell yearbooks online to its potential buyers. The yearbook or ad purchase is between the purchase and the school, just like other merchandise that the school can sell there.

“The School Store is more than a good thing for your yearbook – it is good for your school, since other student organizations, parent booster clubs and alumni can use it to raise money,” said David Massy, marketing services manager.

Increase coverage with Community Upload

How much would your yearbook coverage improve if you had more photographers on staff? Now you can make sure all student events are covered with Community Upload. With Community Upload, students and their families can upload images for your use in the yearbook. More images mean more chances of great images and more story angles to choose from.

Allowing students, parents and others to upload images for possible use in the yearbook can strengthen ties within the school and the community. Even a sense of ownership in the yearbook can be created with your buyers. When a sense of belonging exists, the stage is set for possible increased sales.

Second, the connection will strengthen community ties, not only with current parents and local groups, but with alumni.

With Community Upload, you can collect, organize and store all of the images in one place, and easily transfer them to your Online Design account or download them for use with desktop applications such as InDesign.

“For the first time, you can reach out and have your community involved with your yearbook,” Blackwell said.

Manage your yearbook in Members Only

Members Only still exists, but it has been transformed so that a lot of pertinent information about your yearbook is right there when you enter.

  • Colorful, easy-to-read graphics help you to quickly track the progress of your book as well as book and ad sales.
  • Alerts from Walsworth let you know if action is needed by you now.
  • Announcements from your yearbook sales representative or Walsworth keep you updated through the year.
  • Live Yearbook allows you to see your submitted yearbook pages as a book to aid you and your staff in consistency and production.
  • Web Ladder is available for planning by staffs using desktop publishing.
  • An RSS feed will display links to content of interest from the blog area of Idea File.

Use the My School area to create staff profiles, change your password, update contact information and enroll in programs such as Online Yearbook/Ad Sales and Community Upload. Manage them from here, too.

You can log in to Members Only through the link on the orange navigation bar, or click the log-in link at the top of the page. Both links appear on every page of the website. You can directly access other areas of Members Only, such as Online Design, Yearbook Connect and the Technology Learning Center, by clicking the Quick Links at the bottom of each page.

Learn and train with Idea File

Our former Resource Center is now called Idea File. Like the magazine of the same name, Idea File provides timely information on all aspects of yearbook, but the online version will have more resources and will be updated in a timely manner.

You can read and enjoy articles online, but now you also can react to the article, answer a question in the article, and, in some cases, respond to the author.

“Our efforts are going to be directed to helping advisers break through their isolation – to reach other resources,” Massy said. “We’re not just providing a one-way street, but we are providing a way to reach out to your peers. You can help them or they can help you – like a teachers lounge for publications advisers.”

Articles and other items in the Idea File area will be ever changing to keep the information fresh and timely.

Many other standard features that you have come to rely upon remain on the website. Support Download and Technology Learning Center are in Members Only for you to get manuals or set up training. W|eCare is accessible from the homepage as a quick link to online help from our Computer Support specialists.

Of course, we think that with all of the resources you need for your yearbook at your Walsworth site, you will make it a habit to be here daily.

  • Catherine Hoban

    Hi,
My name is Catherine Hoban, and I am yearbook editor of Island school. We are extremely interested in using Walsworth publishing in order to create this years yearbook. However we have a few question.

    1. We have 10 students on the staff. Can they each get their own account and each work on the yearbook at the same time?

    2. How do we create accounts.

    3. Can the design pages be accessed by all computers. In other words, will the staffers be able to work on the yearbook on their home computers aswell?

Thank You for taking your time to read and answer these preliminary questions. We look forward to hearing back from you, and are eager to begin our yearbook!
