The Manchester staff gives their cover, and their theme, room to "breathe." The light, airy gray blocks on top of simple white provides a complimentary visual to the theme concept. A sparse tree, without leaves, in red, provides a stark contrast to the gentle background.
Theme copy begins on the endsheets with red and reverse white type over a gray background. The typography of Helvetica Neue and Century Gothic is rounded and beautiful and is nicely juxtaposed against the jagged branches of the red tree.
The title page contains most of the required information, and is revealed very simply in red type. Especially impressive is the extended caption used to describe the sole picture on the page. A light type on a path effect is used at the bottom of the page and is weaved throughout the opening spreads.
The first two of three opening spreads reveal a few lines of prose, using type on a path. One word within each line is also used as the headline for the page. “Calm” and “time” lead into the third opening spread of “breathe.” The staff made a bold choice by incorporating dramatic white space in the top third and bottom third of the opening theme pages, bringing the effect from the cover into the book. Color photos on top of light gray squares complement the light and airy theme.

The opening theme pages are repeated within divider pages. There continues to be dramatic, planned white space, and extended captions replace typical theme and divider page copy. A graphic lead-in of a fat, first letter of the first word of each caption helps to draw the reader into reading each one. It is also a nice contrast to the thin Helvetica Neue font.
Dramatic white space gives way to additional color photos that make up main and secondary elements on this drama spread. Mug shots are captured as candids and student quotes run alongside the photos. These two groupings bring additional coverage to the spread beyond what is included in the main story.
On this volleyball spread, vertical photos dominate rather than the landscape, horizontal ones introduced on most theme pages. The type is a study in contrasts: fat/thin, outline/filled-in, 100% black/40% black and brown stroke with black fill/black stroke with brown fill. Body copy is in neat columns, with a ragged right (or flush left) that provides a bit of informality.
Staffs often come up with their closing pages as almost an afterthought. It is fairly common to have 300+ page books with three opening spreads that end with one to three pages. This staff made content at the end of the book a priority. Throughout seven closing pages, captions continue to be extended and well developed. The light type-on-a-path effect used in the opening, with the captions and images, neatly wrap up the year.
