Student Awards
JEA Future Teacher Scholarship
The Journalism Education Association sponsors this $1,000 award for college education majors who plan to teach high school journalism. Applicants must provide a 250-word essay explaining their desire to teach secondary school journalism. The winner will be announced at the NSPA/JEA Fall National High School Journalism Convention. Freedom Forum Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship
Sponsored by the Freedom Forum, this $1,000 college scholarship is awarded each year to 102 high school seniors (a male and female from each state and the District of Columbia). The program is named for Al Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA Today. Applicants must submit samples of their published high school journalism work and demonstrate qualities of “free spirit” in their life, e.g. a visionary, innovative leader, or courageous achiever. Quill & Scroll Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships
Awards of $500 and $1,500 from Quill & Scroll are granted to high school journalism students for use in their freshman year of college only. National winners in the Yearbook Excellence Contest or the International Writing/Photography Contest are eligible. Five selections of the student’s published work must be included with the application. Application deadline is May 10. Teacher Awards
Quill & Scroll Lester G. Benz Memorial Scholarship
A maximum $500 award from Quill & Scroll for all high school journalism teachers or advisers with at least six semester hours of journalism study and a minimum of four years experience teaching and advising school publications. A commitment to return to the high school classroom the next year to apply the information acquired during course study is also required. Application deadline is April 15.
