Tuesday was the second full day at Walsworth’s Galveston workshop. With some hard work, the 2011 themes are starting to come together. It is great to see so many new yearbookers wanting to create a better book.

After some fun lead by Walsworth area sales manager Howard Dusek that emphasized the importance of digging deep through interviews to find the unique stories on campus, we got down to the challenge of finding and perfecting that perfect theme/concept to drive the creation of each school’s 2011 yearbook.

One of the greatest ways to expand your knowledge of journalism and find new inspiration is to attend as many of the sessions as you can at this convention.
My students and I always gather as a staff late at night and spend a few minutes planning the sessions I think they should attend the next day. I also have them take notes to share with the staff on special notepaper I provide. I require that each student attend at least eight sessions and one keynote during the course of the convention.

Not sure why i know this but the Portland JEA/NSPA convention is my 40th.
I took my first group to the spring convention in Tuscon back in 1986. What a great time we had. The funkiest part was the BBQ and rodeo in “Old Tucson.” Although they are now scattered around the U.S. from Boston to New York to Texas, I still keep in touch with almost all of them.
