Here’s another fun story of an old high school yearbook being recovered by chance, 40 years after being lost.

Diane Gerlich-Rogers of New Port Richey, Fla., doesn’t even remember how she misplaced her 1971 yearbook from Indiana’s Griffith High School. But according to this account from tampabay.com, the story of how she recovered it is a fun tale full of interesting coincidences.

Brian Trainor, the yearbook adviser at Whittier Vocational Technical School in Haverhill, Mass., steadfastly believes in preparing his students for their futures with a real-world approach to the classroom.

Part of that philosophy means preparing his students to pass Adobe Certification exams for Rich Media and Visual Communication, using Photoshop, Flash and other valuable tools in today’s marketplace.

We’d like to give a big Yearbooks Blog shout-out to the Walsworth yearbooks selected as Crown Award winners at last week’s CSPA Convention in New York City.

Four Walsworth yearbooks won Gold Crowns – one of the more prestigious honors in scholastic journalism, including Shawnee Mission East High School, Arrowhead Christian Academy, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and Burges High School.

Earlier this month some yearbook staff members at Minooka Community High School in Minooka, Ill., went through some valuable staff bonding and raised money for a great cause when they took part in Polar Plunge fund-raiser in Lake Michigan.

In order to help raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, 18 members of the staff were among the masses who took a cold dip into the water on a chilly morning, as this article in the Morris Daily Herald recounts.

Post image for Walsworth offering chance at iPad 2 with CSPA scavenger hunt

If your yearbook staff will be coming to New York City next week for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s (CSPA) annual national convention, Walsworth is going to be offering a fun way for your group to possibly win a new iPad 2.

Walsworth will be conducting a Scavenger Hunt, comprised of eight locations around the Columbia University campus and NYC. Staffs who visit five of them and take pictures, then bring the images back to the Walsworth booth to get reviewed can get entered into the iPad contest.

According to this recent article from the Orange County Register, researchers at UC-Berkeley studied more than 100 yearbook photos of women from Mills College in the 1950s.

They coded the images based on how animated their smiles were in the photos, then followed up with the women and interviewed them.
