Kalamazoo Central High School, a Walsworth yearbook school in Kalamazoo, Mich., finished in the top three of the public vote and has made it on to the list of finalists in the White House’s Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.

President Obama will now choose between Kalamazoo Central, Denver School of Science & Technology and Clark Montessori High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and speak at one of the school’s graduation ceremonies in May.

Post image for New “45words” campaign promotes First Amendment awareness

The JEA’s Scholastic Press Rights Commission (SPRC) recently started a new national campaign to raise awareness about press rights for students called “45words.”

Named after the well-known, commonly repeated 45 words that make up the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which covers freedom of speech and freedom of the press, the “45words” campaign is being run by students on the SPRC’s new Scholastic Press Student Partners group.

Yearbook staffs from two Walsworth schools are extremely close to possibly getting the chance at covering some history this spring.

Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kan., and Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Mich., are two of the six finalists in President’s Obama’s Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.

I really have to hand it to Walsworth Publishing Company. At the JEA/NSPA convention their presence was amazing.

They gave an educational experience with their game and variety of yearbooks they had on display were beneficial to schools who are starting to incorporate design into their yearbooks.

Yearbookers are unique. (Yeah, don’t try to hide it.) When you are in yearbook, you are IN yearbook. There’s no other group at your entire school that is like the yearbook staff. When you meet another yearbooker there is an instant bond. Finally, someone else who knows what you go through!

Only yearbookers understand all of the hard work, craziness and tears that go into creating the only book that logs the history of that school for that year. Because of that bond you look after one another and before long you have one big yearbook family. Sometimes even complete with your own secret handshake.
